Gum disease: symptoms and assessment in Izmir

Bleeding, swollen or red gums should be checked even when they do not hurt. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums without the supporting bone loss seen in periodontitis. Periodontitis affects the tissues supporting teeth and can lead to recession, loose teeth and tooth loss. The type and severity cannot be diagnosed from symptoms alone.

Signs that need attention

Arrange a dental assessment for repeated bleeding during brushing or interdental cleaning, persistent bad breath, gum tenderness, recession, changes in tooth position or a change in your bite. Painful swelling, an abscess or teeth becoming loose require prompt advice. Difficulty breathing or swallowing or rapidly spreading swelling needs urgent medical care.

What contributes to gum disease?

Dental plaque contains bacteria that can trigger inflammation. Hardened plaque, called tartar, needs professional removal. Smoking, diabetes, family history, some medicines and other individual factors may affect gum health or the response to treatment. Tell the dentist about your health conditions, medicines and tobacco use rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself.

What happens at an assessment?

At Ilke Oral and Dental Health Clinic in Üçyol, Karabağlar, the dentist checks the gums and teeth, records relevant medical history and may measure periodontal pockets and bleeding. X-rays are used when needed to assess supporting bone. These findings help distinguish gingivitis from periodontitis and other causes of gum symptoms.

The dentist explains the findings, daily cleaning methods and the proposed treatment plan. Referral for a specialist periodontal assessment may be appropriate for complex disease. The current clinic team is described on our dentists page.

Treatment and ongoing control

Plaque-related gingivitis can often improve with effective home cleaning and professional care. Periodontitis requires assessment and a longer-term management plan. Treatment aims to control inflammation and limit further damage; lost support does not automatically return after cleaning. Some patients need deeper cleaning, reassessment and additional treatment.

Brush with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth using the method demonstrated for you. Keep review visits and seek support with smoking cessation or diabetes management when relevant. Your dentist sets follow-up intervals according to your condition. Read about the stages of gum treatment and professional tartar removal.

Frequently asked questions

Can gum disease be present without pain?

Yes. Early signs may be bleeding, swelling or persistent bad breath. Regular examinations can identify changes that are not painful.

Will mouthwash cure gum disease?

A rinse may be prescribed for a particular reason, but it does not replace brushing, interdental cleaning or professional removal of deposits. Use it only as advised.

Do I need antibiotics?

Not every case requires antibiotics. The dentist decides whether there is a specific indication; do not self-start leftover antibiotics.

Is a vitamin supplement enough?

Gum symptoms need a diagnosis. Supplements do not replace plaque control or treatment of periodontal disease. Discuss any suspected deficiency with an appropriate clinician.
