Internal whitening for a root-treated tooth
Non-vital whitening, also called internal bleaching, may lighten a discoloured tooth that has already had root canal treatment. Whitening material is applied inside the crown of the tooth by a dentist. This differs from whitening the outside surfaces of several living teeth.
Assessment before whitening
A dark tooth needs a diagnosis before cosmetic treatment. At Ilke Oral and Dental Health Clinic in Izmir Üçyol, the dentist checks the cause of the colour change, remaining tooth structure, existing restorations and the condition of the root canal treatment. Imaging may be needed. Decay, infection or a leaking restoration may require treatment first; changing the colour does not resolve those problems.
What does the procedure involve?
If internal bleaching is suitable, the dentist prepares access, protects the root filling with an appropriate barrier and places the whitening material under a temporary seal. Colour and the condition of the tooth are checked at review visits. The material may need to be changed before the tooth is finally restored with a filling. The number and spacing of visits depend on the response rather than a fixed two- or three-session rule.
Results, limitations and risks
The aim is to reduce the colour difference, but an exact match to neighbouring teeth is not guaranteed. A tooth can darken again. Existing fillings, crowns and veneers do not bleach in the same way as natural tooth tissue, so additional restorative decisions may be needed after reassessment.
Internal whitening is not risk-free. The dentist should explain irritation or discomfort, the possibility of an incomplete result or colour relapse, and uncommon complications such as external cervical root resorption. Alternatives depend on the cause and condition of the tooth; these may include a different restoration or monitoring rather than further bleaching.
Care between appointments
Follow the instructions for the temporary filling, food and cleaning. Do not open the tooth or apply whitening chemicals yourself. Contact the clinic if the temporary seal comes out, the tooth becomes painful or swelling develops. Keep the planned review and final restoration appointments.
Frequently asked questions
Is internal whitening permanent?
No permanent colour result is guaranteed. The response and later darkening vary, and further assessment may be needed if the colour changes again.
Is it always painless?
No. Although the tooth has had root canal treatment, surrounding tissues can still become irritated or uncomfortable. Tell your dentist about symptoms rather than assuming they are normal.
Does every dark tooth need internal bleaching?
No. The cause must be assessed first. Whitening will not treat decay, a crack or infection. Read our endodontic treatment overview for related information.
