Your first dental visit is a chance to explain what matters to you, review your oral health and understand the next steps. Preparing a short list of information and questions can help you make the most of the discussion. A treatment plan depends on your examination; it cannot be settled from a photograph or a general article alone.

Before your appointment

  • Write down your main concern, when it started and what makes it better or worse.
  • Prepare a list of medicines, allergies, health conditions and recent changes in your health.
  • Bring available dental records or previous images, and mention treatment you have had elsewhere.
  • Note any worries, communication needs or practical questions you would like to discuss.

What happens at the examination?

The dentist will ask about your dental and medical history and examine your teeth, gums and mouth. You can describe symptoms, previous experiences and your expectations. The findings help guide discussion of treatment options and home care. Not every first visit involves treatment on the same day.

Are X-rays or a scan automatic?

Imaging is selected according to the clinical question and your existing records. Ask why a new image is needed, what it will help assess and whether an alternative is suitable. An optical scan and a dental CT scan are different procedures; digital planning does not mean everyone needs the same imaging.

Seven questions about a proposed plan

  1. What did the examination show?
  2. Which issues need attention first?
  3. What are the alternatives, including waiting or having no treatment?
  4. What benefits, risks and limitations should I understand?
  5. How many stages might be needed, and what could change the timetable?
  6. What does the cost estimate include, and when might additional treatment be needed?
  7. What care, reviews and future maintenance will be required?

If you feel anxious

Tell the team what worries you before the examination starts. You can ask for an explanation of each step and discuss a signal to pause. Share what helped or made previous visits difficult. Any additional support must be considered individually.

When should the next check-up be?

There is no single interval that suits everyone. Your dentist can recommend a review date based on your teeth and gums, existing treatment and risk of future problems. If a new concern develops between appointments, contact the clinic rather than waiting for a routine review.
